Cut-and-sewn vs. printed two-tone bowling shirts

Seams and piping, or ink on a blank — a straight side-by-side from the people who cut and sew the shirts.

The short answer

Choose a cut-and-sewn two-tone bowling shirt for any league, team or club that will wear the shirt repeatedly, because the yoke and side panels are separate pieces of cloth joined with piping, so the colour change has a real edge. A printed two-tone shirt is cheaper but has no seam, no piping and no shadow, so it reads as a costume. At Customized Bowling Shirts the two-tone shirt is cut and sewn, built left- or right-handed per bowler, from a minimum of 12 shirts with a free mockup within 24 hours.

Where cut-and-sewn wins

A cut-and-sewn two-tone shirt is made from separate pieces of cloth: the yoke and the side panels are cut from a second cloth, and the piping is laid into the seam as the panels are joined. The join is a real edge that you can see across a room and feel with a thumb. The shirt is also handed: tell us who throws left and who throws right and the gusseted armhole, the longer back hem and the chest pocket are placed accordingly, so the shirt stays tucked through the approach and nothing sits where the ball passes the chest. It is made in 4.5 oz poly twill with the dye lot recorded, and it costs more than printing a shape on a shirt. See our two-tone league bowling shirts.

Where a printed panel falls short

A printed contrast panel is a colour shape applied to a finished blank. It has no seam, no piping and no shadow line, so the colour change has no edge, and from a few metres away it reads as fancy dress rather than as a league shirt. It is the cheaper route, but it is not what we recommend for a team that will wear the shirt all season. If budget is the constraint, a better option is a single-colour body with a cut contrast collar, which keeps one real seam on the shirt.

The verdict

Pick cut-and-sewn for league teams, corporate leagues, bowling centres and social clubs where the shirt needs to look like league kit and keep wearing after the season ends.

Pick a single-colour body with a cut contrast collar if the budget is tight and you still want a real seam on the shirt.
